How long can my text messages be?

In the world of text messaging, a single "segment" is limited to 160 characters or less. However, when using emoji, the segment size is reduced to 70 characters or less. 7 characters are reserved for programming purposes for all instances. While it is possible to send messages longer than 160 characters, doing so will result in the message being charged as two separate messages instead of one.
